The engine had two spark plugs and the timing gear was operated already by two push rods. These features significantly improved the engine's performance. It was one of the best engines used in the First World War. It was produced on licence in Great Britain.
The Clerget 9B powered the Sopwith Triplane, Sopwith Camel and the Nieuport 17 fighters of WWI.
