This engine is a four valve per cylinder refinement and up-rating of the legendary, mass produced Packard-designed Liberty engine intended for military use. Post World War I disarmament resulted in only very limited production.

The engine on display has serial number 6. The engines of this type were flown in the Verville VCP-1 and the Loening racing planes, winners of the 1920 and 1922 Pulitzer Prize Races.
