The Jupiter was designed at Cosmos Engineering Company in Britain in 1919. It entered production in 1921 at the Bristol Aeroplane Company, after the Cosmos Engineering Co. had been closed down. It was licence-built in France, Italy, Poland, Japan and the USSR. The French Gnome–Rhône company began the production of the Jupiter engine in 1923.
